This is a sweet, tart and delicious apple pie. Be sure to use Granny Smith apples since they work the best.

- 150g caster sugar
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
- 900g thinly sliced apples
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 recipe pastry for a double 23cm pie
- 4 tablespoons milk (optional)

- Preheat oven to 220 C / Gas 7.
- Mix together the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon zest.
- Line one sheet of pastry in a 23cm pie dish. Layer 1/3 of the apples into pastry case. Sprinkle with sugar mixture and repeat until done. Sprinkle with lemon juice and dot with butter.
- Place second sheet of pastry on top of filling and flute the edges. Cut vents in top crust and brush with milk for a glazed appearance if desired.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 50 minutes.
Apple pie tips
To check the doneness of the pie filling, insert a knife into the centre of the pie. If it meets with little or no resistance, the pie is done.
If the pie is not quite done but the top or edges are becoming too dark, loosely cover the top of the pie with aluminium foil to shield it from the heat.
To add shine and sparkle to your apple pie, thin 4 tablespoons of golden syrup with very hot water. When the pie is done, brush the thinned syrup over the top of the pastry. You can add granulated sugar or demerara sugar at this time. Return the pie to the oven for 2 to 3 minutes to let the glaze dry and set.
Once the pie is done baking, let the pie cool to room temperature before slicing to allow the pie filling to set.

Lisa, Such a volume of apples 'way overfilled the 9-inch plate. Then , the crust started to get real dark after 35 minutes, but the insides had barely begun to cook! ( I took the heat down to 350 at that point).Suggestions for a little "twist " on your classic recipe: for the white sugar, I tried half white and half brown. I also added a smidgen of fresh ground ginger root.-11 Nov 2001
The lemon really makes this pie exceptional!Drop the temperature to 350 F after 25 minutes, and use a baking ring.-15 Aug 2007
I had made other apple pie recipes,but this one was the best tasting and very easy to make.Because I didn't have a fresh lemon rind to zest.I just didn't put it in the suggested recipe.However,I did add the suggested amount of lemon juice,as I did have that on hand.My husband,as well as, my 18 year old son loved it.-10 Oct 2005

Easy Apple Pie Recipe
- 2 9 inch refrigerated pie crusts
- 6 cups of peeled and thinly sliced apples. I like to use Granny Smith apples.
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice optional
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons of butter

There are three main parts to making my apple pie recipe. This process includes making the all-butter crust, making the filling, then actually assembling the apple pie and finally baking. Ready to get started?
You’re basically going to be making this recipe for the crust. It’s super easy, super buttery and most importantly super delicious.
- In a large bowl, stir together flour and salt.
- Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients until it’s the size of small peas.
- Slowly incorporate ice-cold water until a dough starts to form.
- Create a large ball of dough (without kneading), wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate.
Simple Apple Pie Recipe
There are many variations on the apple pie. France’s version, the tarte tatin, is a caramelized, upside down version of the dessert that was created by accident by a hotel owner when she was trying to make a traditional apple pie in the 1880s.
Other variations include Apple turnovers which originated in Germany. Torta de miela is an Italian version a bit like an apple torte with layers of lemon cake at the bottom.
Because there are so many things you can do with the apple pie recipe, the possible ingredients you can add are endless. Let’s start by looking at the ingredients added in a classic apple pie.
Well, it really can’t be an apple pie without fresh apples. Some may start with a pre-made apple pie filling but let’s agree right here and now that it will not take the most discerning taste buds to call this one out. The filling needs to be made at home starting with Jonagolds, Honeycrisp, Braeburns or whatever type of apple is currently in season.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Prepare pie crusts as directed on package for two-crust pie using 9-inch pie plate.
Mix sugar, flour and apple pie spice in small bowl. Sprinkle over apples in large bowl toss to coat well. Spoon into pastry-lined pie plate. Dot with butter. Top with second pie crust. Seal and flute edge. Cut small slits in top crust. Brush crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with additional sugar, if desired.
Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Cool on wire rack.
How to make a Apple Pie with Canned Apples
First roll out one half of the pie crust onto a marble board. If needed use a rolling pin to make the dough a bit larger.
Line the dough with the bottom of the pie pan and press into the sides. In a large bowl mix two cans of the apple pie filling with nutmeg and cinnamon. Then pour 2 cans of apple pie filling into the pie!
I love to make fun designs on my pies! It’s really easy and so relaxing to create little cut outs in the shape of leaves or other fun seasonal shapes. Serena and Lily asked me to recreate a pie that was inspired by there Valley wallpaper and I was SO up for the challenge!

Roll out the second ball of dough and cut into 1/2-inch wide strips. Lay half of the strips about 1/2-inches away from each other in one direction. Flip them over halfway and then start interlacing them with the remainder of the strips, in the opposite direction. Repeat until you have an interlaced crust.
Once you've created the lattice, brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 425 F for 15 minutes. Remove from oven. Loosely cover pie with foil, so the crust doesn't burn and then return to the oven to continue baking for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool for 15 to 20 minutes, then enjoy!
